When events in the news break my heart and overpower my ability to help, there’s something I can do – we can do. Something big!
We see it everywhere. Overseas, a crying woman begs the west to “save us or bomb us” to end their suffering under ISIS. A sex slave survivor says, “What they are doing to women is more difficult than death.” North Korea and Iran threaten nuclear armament. A dear friend in my city leads Christians under the prayerful leadership of Jesus Christ to fight the monster of human trafficking. Race tensions rise. Some police act wrongly and benevolent officers are murdered. The unemployed want jobs to provide for living expenses, expensive education and healthcare. Tensions run high on the issues of religious freedom and a fair, safe, compassionate immigration system.
God and the life-changing power of Jesus Christ is the unrivaled solution. So, we pray for opportunities and grace, share Jesus with people around us and pray for their salvation.
But the Bible shows the support of government is also God’s plan.
- “Rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad.” (Romans 13:3)
- “governors as sent by [God] to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good.” (1 Peter 2:14)
God urges us to “pray [and] intercede…for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life.” (1 Timothy 2:2)
He says, “The king’s heart is a stream of water in the hand of the Lord; he turns it wherever he will.” (Proverbs 21:1)
Every one of His words are trustworthy. And He’s that big. …So God inspired Paul to write to Timothy, pray for them!
But I have been guilty more often than not of bowing my head just to shake it in my hands.
Psalm 72 refreshed my soul with hope and fills my mind with life and peace and goodness. It’s my template, praying for our government leaders. This Psalm was written for Solomon. It will be fulfilled in Jesus Christ. But its words I can pray for any of my leaders, whether I agree with them today or not. Do you long for words and to help you pray for them too? I believe God cares and helps me in my weakness and inability to pray. God gave us words. Please, pray them with me! Not just now and today. Let’s join together and pray His words over and over and watch God move in our land.
Inspired by Psalm 72:
Father in heaven, give our leaders Your judgements
And Your righteousness to guide them
So they will judge us with righteousness and give afflicted ones justice.
Let them rule us, Your people, here well.
Would you bless us with prosperity and peace under them?
Let our rulers defend the poor, deliver the children of the needy,
And crush oppressors.
Oh, God, let our leaders fear you.
Let them bring refreshment to our land like rain showers.
Let righteous men flourish here under them.
Let peace abound.
Give our rulers power over foreign enemies.
May other nations honor our leaders.
Give our rulers a tender ear to respond to the needy and helpless poor.
Make them full of pity, compassion and respect for their lives,
and help them to deliver these from violent and dishonest people.
May prayers be made for them continually – blessings all day.
May people in our cities blossom like grass on fields.
Oh, let our nation be a blessing to all the nations on earth.
Because YOU do wonderful things, God. You alone.
May Your name be glorified through us.
Our God does great things when His people pray!
